PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Maryland Eastern Shore got in the win column for the first time in over a month on New Year’s Eve, as the Hawks defeated Chestnut Hill College 68-62 inside the W. P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The game served as the Hawks’ (2-13) final tune-up before conference play begins in the new calendar year.
“I want to commend the guys and the coaching staff for the job they did,” head coach Clifford Reed said. “It’s difficult when you have been getting beat up like we have to stay positive and know how to win.”
The Hawks led for over 38 minutes during the contest. Eastern Shore’s only deficit was at 3-2 two minutes into the game and the deficit only lasted for 12 seconds.
In the first half, Maryland Eastern Shore boasted a strong inside-outside game. Forwards Tyler Jones and Isaac Taylor each had eight points in the first 20 minutes getting all of their points in or around the paint. Guard Ryan Andino supported them by knocking down three shots behind the arc in the first half.
The advantage inside went to the Hawks throughout the game, but the Griffins were able to combat that with strong perimeter shooting. Chestnut Hill made 11 3-pointers on the afternoon to stay right in the game even though they did not gain the lead after the early minutes.
Eastern Shore appeared to have gained full control in the second half after a 12-2 run pushed their lead to 67-51 with 2:09 left. However, the Griffins would not go down without a fight as they ended the game on an 11-1 run but eventually ran out of time.
During that late run for Chestnut Hill, the Hawks struggled from the free throw line, which was something that had been an Achilles heel for the Shore all game. The Hawks finished 10-26 from the line including missing the front end of several one-and-one opportunities.
“We have be better at free throws,” Reed said. “When we missed them that aided them in their comeback but we had a big enough lead and was able to hold them off.”
Jones led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Other players in double figures for the Hawks were Colen Gaynor (Berlin, MD) with 12 points and Taylor had 11.
Another notable performance for Maryland Eastern Shore came from Gabriel Gyamfi (Brampton, ON, Canada). Gyamfi had seven points and a game high nine rebounds including five on the offensive glass.
The Griffins were led by Ed McWade as he finished with a team high 16 points. Amir Warrick and Billy Miller VI also had double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively.
